I am having such an awesome time. Yesterday, I had me some GI, but other than that, the rest of the team and I are just great. When I am in the OR looking at what is going on, Jeff, Pedro, Tom, Paul, Mary, Dawn or anyone else will stop what they are doing to let me know. I frequently ask questions, and I think they are getting used to me bugging them for answers. Since I was sick yesterday all day long they were constantly asking me how I felt and if needed medicine. I really feel that we have become very close.
Translating for the team is a bit hard at times because I dont know very many medical terms in either Spanish or English. But we somehow communicate with the locals, which I must say are very appreciative of our services. One thing that I do get kind of annoyed by is how the locals in the hospital keep calling me "Doctor". I do wear scrubs, so I can understand the confusion, but when possible I tell them that I am not a doctor; just an interpreter.

Today is Friday and the end of the 1st week, I cannot believe how fast the week has gone by. Today we had clinic again and again more than 100 people showed up waiting for surgery. All of the surgeries this week were performed without complications. Our group has worked extremely well together and the local staff has been terrific. The team is tired and in need of this weekend rest, we plan a trip to Lake Titicaca. This evening Dr Jeff, Dr Mary and myself were on the unit doing rounds before going home.

Our last stop was that of the room of a little boy who just had hand surgery that day. He asked me to come closer so he could tell me something and then wrapped his arms around
my neck in a bear hug. We left the unit at about 7:30 in the evening and the last thing we heard as we left the unit was a little boy far down the hall calling "Martin...addios...... Martin.........."

(chinita y yo)
Well hello,
I'm certainly a blog kind of guy. And seeing as I have such a hard time keeping a diary, I'll give this a try. Right now I'm sitting in my Parkdale apartment. A little over a week ago I returned from a far too short trip to Bolivia. I am now totally smiiten by wanderlust.
But, here I am in Toronto. Living my Toronto life. Today I'm heading off to my union's convention. The Ontario Public Service Employee's Union (OPSEU). I am a youth worker in Downtown Toronto. A job that has parts that I love. Other parts ... not so much ... more on that in due time.
Well ... I'm off ....

Upon arrival to the hotel, we all settled in, had some breakfast and took the morning to rest. The altitude of La Paz has affected all of us to some degree, some more than others, and we are all exhausted and most of us with headaches due to the high altitude. In the afternoon, we went into downtown La Paz for a typical Boilvian restaurant and did some souvenir shopping at the Mercado(market). The people of Bolivia are very gracious and soft spoken and all of our interactions thus far have been great.
Despite of the exhaustion from the trip, lack of sleep and altitude, we are all very excited and anxious to begin work at the hospital. Several of the team members went to the hospital today to check on our supplies and the facility and tomorrow will be set-up day and clinic day where we will be screening all of the potential patients. On Tuesday surgeries will begin. Please keep posted to the blog and one of the team will try to make an entry daily, hopefully with some pictures.

My name is Martin Walsh and I am the Hand Therapist for the Hand Surgical Team here in La Paz, Bolivia. The team arrived today Sunday April 10 early in the morning. Most of us had been traveling all day Saturday as well as Saturday night to La Paz. We were greeted at the airport by our host Surgeon Dr. Jorge Tarazas who escorted the team on a short but beautiful descent into the city of La Paz at sunrise. The city of La Paz is surrounded my mountains and our first view of the city at sunrise was breathtaking.
