Bolivia's War Over Water

"In recent years "privatization" has become an economic theology in Latin America, driven by a set of commandments written by the U.S., and the U.S.-dominated lenders, the Wold Bank and International Monetary Fund."

Someone tried to buy my Polaroid camera.

From Sara m.:

boliviamarketcopy.jpg">

So there was this amazing outdoor market a few blocks from our hotel

where you could find absolutely everything. Seriously. There was the

artisian section, toys, cleaning products, shoes, clothes, hats and a

ton of produce. I would have loved to take more here, but most of the

people selling are more the indigenious type, and dont like their

picture taken because they think the camera is taking their soul. Some

of them even quickly covered up their food when I brought out the

camera.

boliviadrivecopy.jpg">

Our drive to Lake Titicaca was only supposed to take 3 hours max from

the airport in La Paz. However, there is this town along the main

highway that wants representation in Congress (or something like that)

so they decided to close down their section of the road. We ended up

having to turn down this dirt road to bypass that section, which added

another 3.5 hours to our trip. Id say it was worth it though because we

got to see a lot of smaller villages and some amazing scenery. At some

points we had to get out of our bus and walk while the driver tackled

some pretty sticky situations (large rocks, big ditches, steep hills,

sharp turns, etc.)

So that is an overview of Copacobana, the little town that we were

staying in on Lake Titicaca. The lake is huge! Its something like 100

miles long, 50 miles wide and is at something near 13000ft in

elvevation (highest navigable lake in the world). By the time we

finally arrived we were all exhausted and hungry, but we were still in

shock that we were actually there. I mean how many people can say they

have been to Lake Titicaca?

boliviaworkcopy.jpg">

This is from our last day of working on the house, and as you can tell

by the scaffolding, we got pretty far. There were a lot of crazy things

we had to do and deal with, but I can prouldly say that I have a new

appreciation for the roof over my head.

These

adorable girls are Carol and Karen, two of the three kids from the

family that we were buliding the house for. Carol, the younger one, was

totally amazed by polaroids and I ended up giving her a few. Seeing how

much she cherished those photographs really hit me with a new wave of

motivation for the work I want to do with kids and photography.

Well, those are just a few from the trip to Bolivia. More pictures and stories to come after I pick up my 35mm film tonight.

Heading North

From Dusty Stuff:

Well I'm now on my way to some warm weather. I arrived in Quito Equador 2 days ago and now starting to plan my way up to Colombia. Ah Colombia, I've been wiating for this for so long, it's one country I've wanted to go to ever since I landed on the continent 15 months ago. I think it's partly the danger (so some say) and the Colombians themselves. I've heard nothing but good reports about it from other travellers and I've met a lot of Colombians on my trip and they are all really nice people. I have some bad news for the people who enjoy my photos. I lost my camera in Bolivia, DOH. I had about 85 good shots on it. Of Bolivia and some friends in Argentina, thats what I was most upset about. So I'm on the hut of another. Couldn't find anything in Peru, so no shots of Lima. I am looking at a smaller, pocket size Olympus at the moment, it dosn't have as many features but it's handy. Hope to get some more photos on. My trip from Argentina has been plaged by broken buses. The trian trip through Bolivia was great and I'm going up in the mountians of Equador on the roof of a train this weekend. It's about 5000 meters high. It's great to be on the road again, after so long in Corrientes, though I have left behind a lot of really good friends, but never the less, I know some of them are going to be a part of my life for a long long time, and maybe forever. Seeings that this is a photo blog, and I don't have any photos for you this time, I won't rattle on, you'll just have to wait till I get another camera. Till next time, CHAU

Mission Year

From Newsletters and blog posts:

On my trip to Bolivia with Compassion I came across an organization called Mission Year (MissionYear.org). Oreon Trickey was one of the Compassion artists on the trip, and she's on staff with Mission Year.

In a nutshell, Mission Year is, as the name implies, a year of mission work in an inner city. Missionaries raise their own support, with a goal of $12,000 for the year. One of the goals is to live as simply as the poor they are serving, so they only have direct access to $60/month after rent.

I just had lunch with David Malcolm, who is the son of my parents' friends. He's spent his year volunteering (they can't receive an income) at a church and public school in Philadelphia's inner city. He was able to facilitate a Bible study at the school, where he saw God moving through David's efforts.

To contribute to Mission Year go to MissionYear.org. If you'd like you can designate David Malcolm or Oreon Trickey.
