My point of arrival in South America was La Paz in Bolivia. If you want to get to the Amazon from La Paz you can catch a bus... or ride a bike! Some tour groups take you to the top of a pass in a bus, then you ride down the other side on a rented bike. This is at the top of the pass, at around 5000 metres (bloody high!) from memory. From here on it was all downhill.
